Description

Diazomethane is a highly reactive, versatile methylating agent and carbene precursor essential for advanced chemical synthesis. Its primary value lies in its ability to efficiently introduce methyl groups into a wide range of substrates, including carboxylic acids, phenols, and enolizable ketones, under mild conditions. This compound is a critical reagent for research chemists and process development scientists in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and specialty chemical industries, where precise molecular construction is paramount.

Application

  • Pharmaceutical Intermediate Synthesis: Key for the methylation of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and the preparation of pyrazoles and other heterocyclic compounds.
  • Agrochemical Manufacturing: Used in the synthesis of certain pesticides and herbicides through methylation and cyclopropanation reactions.
  • Carbene Chemistry: Serves as a source of methylene (CH₂) for cyclopropanation of alkenes, a fundamental transformation in organic synthesis.
  • Analytical Derivatization: Employed to methylate carboxylic acids for gas chromatography (GC) analysis, enhancing volatility and detection.
  • Polymer & Material Science: Utilized in surface modification and the synthesis of specialized polymeric materials.
  • Laboratory-Scale Methylations: Preferred reagent for small-scale, high-value methylations where selectivity and yield are critical.

Quality Control

Our Diazomethane is produced and handled under stringent conditions to ensure safety and consistency. While typically supplied as a solution in a suitable organic solvent (e.g., diethyl ether) due to its hazardous gaseous nature, each batch is characterized for concentration and stability. We provide comprehensive Certificates of Analysis (COA) detailing assay and purity. Our quality management system adheres to cGMP principles where applicable, ensuring traceability and reliability for our global B2B partners.

Storage

Due to its highly volatile, gaseous, and thermally unstable nature, Diazomethane requires extreme caution. It must be stored as a dilute solution in a compatible, anhydrous solvent at temperatures between -20°C to 0°C. The container must be tightly sealed with a pressure-relief valve and kept in a secondary containment, in a dedicated, well-ventilated, and explosion-proof freezer, strictly protected from light, heat, and mechanical shock. Never store in ground glass joint or sealed apparatus without proper venting.
