Nereistoxin pesticides are neurotoxic insecticides derived from the naturally occurring nereistoxin molecule, functioning primarily through inhibition of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in insects. This mode of action leads to paralysis and rapid death of chewing and sucking pests. Widely used in rice, vegetables, and fruit crops, nereistoxin analogues such as cartap and bensultap provide effective control of stem borers, leaf folders, planthoppers, and other major pests. They demonstrate favorable selectivity and reduced mammalian toxicity compared with earlier organophosphate and carbamate insecticides. Their systemic and translaminar activity enhances performance in dense canopies. Resistance management is important due to increasing use. Nereistoxin pesticides remain important for integrated pest management where softer, targeted chemistry is required.
