They act by disrupting sodium channel function in insect neurons, causing hyperexcitation and death. Compounds such as DDT, lindane, and endosulfan were widely applied due to their long-lasting residual activity and broad-spectrum effectiveness. However, organochlorines are highly persistent in the environment, bioaccumulate in food chains, and pose significant risks to wildlife and human health. Many have been banned or severely restricted under global treaties such as the Stockholm Convention. Despite limited modern use, they remain important historically and continue to influence regulatory, environmental, and public health policies.
