Lincosamides
Lincosamides are bacteriostatic antibiotics that inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, interfering with peptide chain elongation. The class includes clindamycin and lincomycin, widely used against anaerobic bacteria, Gram-positive cocci, and certain protozoa. They are particularly valuable in treating skin and soft tissue infections, dental infections, aspiration pneumonia, pelvic inflammatory disease, and toxoplasmosis. In addition to antimicrobial activity, clindamycin suppresses toxin production in severe Streptococcus and Staphylococcus infections. Their excellent tissue distribution supports efficacy in bone infections. However, the risk of Clostridioides difficile–associated colitis requires careful clinical use.
