Antischistosomal drugs are APIs used to treat schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma species. The primary agents include praziquantel and oxamniquine, which induce severe spasms and tegumental disruption in the worms, leading to paralysis and death. These drugs are effective against adult schistosomes and widely used in global control programs. Their mechanisms involve altering calcium homeostasis, damaging parasite membranes, and exposing antigenic sites to host immunity. Antischistosomal APIs are essential for reducing disease burden, preventing organ damage, and limiting transmission in endemic regions. With no widely used vaccine available, chemotherapy remains the cornerstone of schistosomiasis control.
