Description

Zirconium CAS NO 7440-67-7 is a lustrous, gray-white, strong transition metal known for its exceptional corrosion resistance and high melting point. Its unique combination of properties makes it a critical material for demanding industrial applications where reliability under extreme conditions is paramount. This metal is essential for manufacturers in the nuclear, aerospace, chemical processing, and advanced ceramics industries seeking durable, high-performance components.

Application

  • Nuclear Industry: As a cladding material for nuclear fuel rods due to its low neutron absorption cross-section and excellent corrosion resistance in high-temperature water.
  • Chemical Processing: Fabrication of reactors, valves, pumps, and piping systems that handle highly corrosive acids and alkalis.
  • Aerospace & Defense: Used in jet engine components, rocket nozzles, and airframe parts where high strength and heat resistance are required.
  • Advanced Ceramics: Production of zirconia (ZrO₂) for structural ceramics, thermal barrier coatings, oxygen sensors, and biomedical implants.
  • Alloying Agent: Added to metals like steel, magnesium, and aluminum to improve strength, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature performance.
  • Pyrotechnics & Ammunition: Used in priming compounds and incendiary devices.
  • Gettering: Purification of vacuum tubes and other electronic components by absorbing residual gases.
  • Medical Devices: Utilized in surgical instruments and as a base material for certain biocompatible implants.

Quality Control

Our zirconium is produced and handled under stringent quality management protocols to ensure batch-to-batch consistency and traceability. We supply various grades, including reactor-grade, commercial-grade, and powder metallurgy grades, each meeting specific industry standards such as ASTM B350, ASTM B551, and customer-specific requirements. A comprehensive Certificate of Analysis (COA) detailing purity, metallic impurities, gas content (oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen), and physical form is provided with every shipment.

Storage

Preserve in a tightly closed container, protected from light. Due to its pyrophoric nature in fine powder or chip form and its tendency to be easily oxidized, zirconium must be stored under an inert atmosphere (argon or nitrogen) in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources and incompatible materials such as strong oxidizers and acids. Store at room temperature (15-25°C).
