Flocculants

Flocculants are polymers or inorganic agents used to aggregate fine particles into larger flocs, facilitating solid–liquid separation in industrial, environmental, and wastewater treatment processes. They act by neutralizing surface charges, bridging particles, or altering interparticle interactions. Flocculants include cationic, anionic, and nonionic polymers, aluminum and iron salts, polyacrylamides, biopolymers, and hybrid materials. They are widely applied in mineral processing, sludge dewatering, papermaking, textile wastewater treatment, and oil–water separation. Their efficiency depends on molecular weight, charge density, dosage optimization, and compatibility with process conditions. High-performance flocculants improve clarity, reduce turbidity, enhance filtration rates, and lower operational costs in large-scale water treatment operations.
